First settled in 1735 Athol was originally names Pequiag.  In 1762 at the time of it's incorporation the town was renamed Athol by John Murray who said it reminded him of his ancestral home in Blair-Athol Scotland. 

Athol is located in northern Worcester County between The Tully Mountains and The Quabbin Reservoir.  Athol lies 38 miles north of Worcester and 71 miles west of Boston
