A Brief History of Charlton


In 1750 inhabitants and land owners on the westerly part of the township of Oxford petitioned the general court to create a separate township for reasons that "part of your petitioners do not belong to any town whatsoever, and the other part of your petitioners was not in the least regarded by its inhabitants" They were first refused, but made a second attempt in 1754. In 1755 the bill entitled, "An act for setting off the inhabitants as also their estates, of the west part of Oxford into a separate district passed. Interesting facts, the highest land between the seaboard on the east and the Connecticut River on the west is found near the center of Charlton. Birthplace of William T. G. Morton MD discoverer of the use of ether as anesthesia in surgical operations was born in Charlton. the famous "Grizzley" Adams is buried in Charlton

Rick Lundstrom I live in Oxford--Richard J. Lundstrom, 3 Willow Street, Oxford, MA 01540-2231. I am the Nicholas Rich line representative for the Rich family Association. I can do any RICH related research for Oxford--the family spread in from next door Sutton. Heavily intermarried into Davis family (who didn't?), Moores, Learned, Barton, etc etc. I have the RFA line's data, and can pop into the library (5 minutes away) for Vitals, family genealogies, etc. I have hunted through local cemeteries for related families. Who else lives in Oxford? We should meet to compare notes andconnections between the families.

Beverly Rainey has volunteered to do look ups in Charlton, Mass. Vital Records to 1850 (After June 5, 2000, as she will be away until then) She is researching ..HAMMOND.. (from Thomas of Lavenham and Newton Mass.) WHEELOCK (from Shropshire and Medfield, Mass.) Connected with Trowbridge/Stone/Whitney/Albee/all in the Worcester County area.
