SIXTH GENERATION51. Nathan BANNISTER
(10)(3)
was born on 3 Jul 1746 in Brookfield, Worcester, MA.
(8) He died on 23 Aug 1825 in Boylston, Worcester, MA.
(1)(13) He was buried in Old
Burial Grounds, Boylston, Worcester, MA.(13)
Nathan came from Waltham or Weston and settled in Shrewsbury and then
was the first of the family to settle in Boylston, MA. They lived in the southwest
part of Shrewsbury North Precinct (now Boylston) where he had a farm and saw/
grist mill. He was one of the highway surveyors in 1760. Nathan went to work
for Daniel Whitney and married his daughter and they settled on her father's
place, which has been known in Boylston ever since the incorporation of the town
of Boylston as the Banister Place. Nathan built the house and other buildings,
and also took over and ran the saw/ grist mill. The Mill has had at least three
different locations since it was first built. First near the outlet of Sewell
pond, then about midway between the pond and the present Mill Road and finally
the last location on the mill road leading from the Worcester Road at Morningdale
to the Shrewsbury Road now known as Sewell Street at the Banister house. This
road known as Mill road was laid out as a town road and built between 1811-1813,
shows the probable date of the erection of the mill upon its last site. At that
time the Banisters added to the business of the Saw/Grist Mill , a nail Shop
for the manufacture of hand wrought nails. There was another nail shop in Boylston
which probably did a larger business than the Banister's conducted. This other
was that of Lieut. Aaron Sawyer at Sawyer's Mill on the South Branch of the Nashua
River which had unlimited water power and had a connection with the Nail Factory
or Blacksmith shop, Saw/grist mill or Clothiers Mill and Oil Mill.
He was married to Sarah WHITNEY (daughter of Daniel WHITNEY
and Thankful ALLEN) on 17 Dec 1769 in Shrewsbury, Worcester,
MA.(14) Sarah WHITNEY
was born on 9 Sep 1749 in Shrewsbury, Worcester, MA.
